Imperforate Anus

An imperforate anus is a congenital defect in which the opening to the anus is missing or blocked. It is caused by abnormal development of the fetus and can occur with other birth defects. 

Signs/symptoms

• Swollen belly
• Baby does not pass stool within 24 – 48 hours after birth 
• Anal opening is near the vaginal opening in girls 
• Missing or moved opening to the anus 
• Stool is passed through the vagina, base of the penis, scrotum or urethra 

Treatment  

• Surgery is needed to repair the defect
• Usually a temporary colostomy is needed
• Patient need an evaluation to look for other associated abnormalities such as renal, cardiac, and spine anomalies.
