Enlarged lymph nodes in children are usually from a benign process and are most commonly noted in the ages of 1-8. However, they warrant close study and possible work-up to treat infections and malignancies. 

Signs/Symptoms that can represent malignancy:  

  • Enlarged lymph nodes over in multiple places
  • Firm
  • Several nodes that feel stuck together
  • Painless
  • Large 

Many causes of lymphadenopathy:  

  • Infection (viral, bacterial, fungal or protozoal)
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Malignancy (leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma)
  • Reaction to certain medications
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Cat scratch disease 


  • If infectious, antibiotics
  • Surgical excision
