Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s Disease causes chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract, usually affecting the small bowel. 10 - 15% of patients with Crohn's are children, and the childhood prevalence appears to be increasing.

Signs/Symptoms (may develop gradually or have sudden onset)

  • Abdominal pain
  • Recurrent diarrhea
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Bleeding
  • Weight loss
  • Low grade fever
  • Low energy
  • May have ulcers or fistulas around the anus

  • Many patients with Crohn's disease may need surgery if symptoms cannot be controlled by medication.
  • Some children with limited Crohn's disease will improve greatly with removal of the affected part of the intestine.
  • In general, surgery is used to remove damaged areas of the small intestine or colon.
