Bronchogenic Cyst

Relatively rare, bronchogenic cysts are cystic lesions of the mediastinum, or the middle section of the chest cavity. They can be life-threatening in infants and small children as they can compress the airway.

May be associated with:

  • Cardiac and pericardiac anomalies
  • Usually isolated

Problems that can occur from Bronchogenic Cysts:

  • Airway compression 
  • Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing
  • Infection
  • Respiratory problems


  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fever from infection


  • Surgery
  • Thoracotomy
  • Thorascopy assisted surgery
  • In all cases, the surgeon gains access to the chest cavity and removes the cyst
